The role of heme in biology: from catalysis to regulation

The talk will explore the role of heme iron in biology, and will highlight the ways in which spectroscopic and crystallographic methods can be brought to bear on the question. It will start at the beginning with globins and cytochromes, and lead into catalytic enzymes and a discussion of their reactive intermediates. At the end, the talk will briefly explore newer, regulatory roles for heme iron in larger and more complicated systems, and the possibilities that this offers for the future.
