2019 Graduate Student Awards
Nineteen graduate students were honored at the annual Department of Chemistry Graduate Student Awards presentation, held in Taylor Auditorium on Friday, May 31, 2019 with Tom Muir, the Van Zandt Williams Jr. Class of 1965 Professor of Chemistry and Chair, presenting. Three categories of awards were presented: first-year academic achievement, merit awards, and teaching awards. Photos of all recipients present for the event appear below.
First Year Academic Achievement
These fellowships were gifted to the department by alumni and provide summer support to first-year students in recognition of academic excellence.

The Stephen P.A. Fodor *85 Graduate Fellowship in Chemistry to Olivia Garry (MacMillan lab)
The Stanley A. Lefkowitz *70 Graduate Fellowship in Chemistry to Holt Sakai (MacMillan lab)
The David V. Milligan ’62 Graduate Fellowship in Chemistry to Haina Wang (Torquato group)
The George B. Rathmann *51 Graduate Fellowship in Chemistry to Kewei Zhao (Myneni lab)
The Nat C. Robertson *42 Graduate Fellowship in Chemistry to Jackson Deobald (Knowles lab)
Merit Awards
The Third Year Seminar Hubbell ’47 Prize to Jacob DeHovitz (Hyster lab) and Bradley Lukasak (Muir lab)
This award is given to one or two 3rd year students for a superb seminar presentation as judged by current 4th-years students.
The Arthur A. Patchett ’51 Graduate Fellowship in Chemistry to Aaron Zhong (Chirik lab)
This award, provided by a donation from Dr. Arther Patchett ’51, a former executive of Merck and Co. and an alumnus of Princeton, is granted to a senior organic student who has excelled at Princeton.
MacMillan-Cava Prize for Outstanding Thesis Research to Chip Le (MacMillan lab)
This annual prize is given to a graduating student who produced a thesis of exceptional quality.
Badin *45 Graduate Student Prize to Xiaoyu Song (Schoop lab)
This prize is awarded every two years to a top second or third-year student, based on grades, research ratings, and faculty letters of recommendation.
Teaching Awards
Margaret & Herman Sokol Fellowship in Chemistry to Marcos Calegari Andrade (Selloni lab)
This award recognizes outstanding work as a teaching assistant for a student interested in a career in teaching and research.
Hubert Alyea ’24 Teaching Award to Ben Zhang (Scholes lab)
Granted in memory of Hubert Alyea, a renowned chemist and beloved Princeton instructor, this award recognizes outstanding dedication and enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching.
Pickering Teaching Award to Kenzie Clark (Seyedsayamdost lab), Crystal Dai (Kleiner lab), Stavros Kariofilis (Doyle lab), Marissa Lavagnino (MacMillan lab), Lei Tian (Scholes lab), and Elaine Tsui (Knowles lab)
Named in honor of Miles Pickering, Director of the Chemistry Undergraduate Labs from 1981 until his death in 1991, these awards recognize excellence in undergraduate teaching.
