Interstitial, vacancy, and substitutional defects are present in all materials. Some are electronically innocuous while others have profound impact on the bulk material properties. In both cases, the defects can be experimentally difficult to detect, particularly if the defect is hydrogenic (a proton with either 2, 1, or 0 associated electrons). This problem is well-suited to computational chemistry, and this talk explores how hydrogenic defects play operative roles in materials consisting of covalent bonds.
