Oxazolidinone-derived Evans Enolates: Structures, Reactivities, and Origins of Stereoselectivities

As part of a program to understand how structure and mechanism influence organolithium reactivity and selectivity I will describe recent progress in characterizing and studying lithium enolates. The talk will focus on the iconic oxazolidinone-based Evans enolates that have found their way into 1600 patents yet have received essentially no structural or mechanistic scrutiny until now. As is so often the case, the origins of the stereochemistry bear little resemblance to conventional wisdom.
