Reunions 2019: Alyea Demonstrations & Frick Tour
Sat, Jun. 1, 2019, 11:00am - 12:00pm
Taylor Auditorium, Frick Chemistry Laboratory
11:00 am to 12:00 pm
Alumni, friends and family are invited to the family-friendly Alyea Demonstration led by lecture demonstrator Dr. Kitty Wagner in Taylor Auditorium.
The annual Alyea Memorial Demonstration Lecture is appropriate for all ages. Hubert Alyea taught at Princeton from 1930 to 1972 and became world famous for lively, colorful chemistry classes and public talks that were as much performance as professorship. Described as one of the Princeton’s, “most popular faculty members of the mid-20th century,” Alyea became well known for lively and captivating demonstrations that sometimes resulted in explosions that would singe his clothing. This demonstration lecture will feature some of the very same experiments presented by Professor Alyea. Following the lecture/demonstration, the annual Alyea Awards will be presented to select students from Princeton-area high schools who have been judged by their chemistry teachers to have demonstrated the greatest enthusiasm for chemistry. The Alyea Awards are given jointly by the American Chemical Society (ACS) Princeton Local Section and the Department of Chemistry at Princeton University.
