Old Metabolites, New Metabolites

Thu, May. 7, 2026, 4:30pm
Taylor Auditorium, Frick Chemistry Lab B02
Host: Paul Chirik

My lab develops chemical and quantitative approaches to understand metabolism—the conversion of nutrients into energy and biomass. In the first half of this talk, I will describe chemical kinetic models that illuminate the homeostatic regulation of canonical metabolites such as glucose and fatty acids. These models support a central role for mass action in linking obesity to diabetes. In the second half, I will describe collaborative work with Michael Skinnider combining mass spectrometry and artificial intelligence to discover previously unrecognized mammalian metabolites. These efforts expand the chemical space of metabolism and point to new, actionable opportunities to improve metabolic health.
