Leach Summer Scholars Program 2017 wraps up another successful summer!
The twelve members of the Leach Summer Scholars Program wrapped up their 9 week research experience with lunch on the outdoor patio of EPS in Princeton. Students tackled original research projects under the mentorship of chemistry faculty, staff, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers. The 12 Leach Scholars were chosen through a competitive application process managed by the Department of Chemistry. To be eligible, applicants must have completed their freshman or sophomore year at Princeton University. Activities run from the second week of June through to the second week of August.
A busy schedule of auxiliary activities kept the young scientists busy and learning. The agenda included:
- A summer program kick-off pizza party
- Library online resource training
- Laboratory safety training for professional researchers
- Fire safety training
- Ethics training for professional researchers
- A breakfast and career exploration workshop with Pamela Cohen and Kate Copolla from the University’s Career Services Office
- A field trip to The Chemical Heritage Foundation Museum in Center City Philadelphia
- A mini course on the art of designing a professional research poster and how to write an abstract, led by Dr. Susan VanderKam
- A seminar on the history of chemistry by Dr. Susan VanderKam
- Student wrap-up research presentations
- Senior chemistry major research presentations
- A breakfast and professional research poster session entitled “Pancakes and Posters”
