Torquato named the Lewis Bernard Professor in Natural Sciences

Effective July 1, 2018, Salvatore Torquato, Professor of Chemistry and the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials, has been named the Lewis Bernard Professor in Natural Sciences.

Research in the Torquato group is centered on statistical mechanics and soft condensed matter theory.

The Lewis Bernard Professorship in Natural Sciences was established by a friend to honor Mr. Bernard.

Lewis W. Bernard ’63 is the Founder and Chairman of Classroom, Inc., a pioneer in providing blended learning tools and game-based learning programs to support educators and build students’ literacy skills and confidence as learners. The initiative began as a demonstration project in two New York City high schools. Since its inception in 1992, it has served more than 750,000 students around the country. 

Mr. Bernard is board chair of the American Museum of Natural History and a trustee of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation. He has served on a number of not-for-profit boards including the Commonwealth Fund, the Educational Broadcasting Corporation, the John and Mary R. Markle Foundation (chairman), the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Harvard Management Company.

In 1994, Mr. Bernard retired from the Board of the Morgan Stanley Group where for almost thirty years he held a number of executive positions.
