Special Symposia
The Department of Chemistry hosts three Special Symposia to honor distinguished faculty with presentations from speakers in their fields. A list of past and recent lectures is below. For upcoming Special Symposia, please see our Department Seminars & Events page.
Semmelhack Symposia
Martin Semmelhack is a Professor of Chemistry in the Catalysis/Synthesis and Chemical Biology subfields. His research focuses on the design, synthesis, and evaluation of small molecules involved in the biological processes. Marty has been with the Department of Chemistry since 1978 and, among other honors, received the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2018, the year that marked his 40th Anniversary at Princeton.
Here are the dates of his symposia and the featured speakers:
· Nov. 21, 2014 – Jon Clardy, Harvard Medical School and Julius Rebek, Scripps Research Institute
· May 7, 2018 – Luis Campos, Columbia and William Dichtel, Northwestern University
· Nov. 19, 2021 – David MacMillan, Princeton University
· Feb. 28, 2023 – Richmond Sarpong, University of California, Berkeley
· Sept. 6, 2024 – John Hartwig, University of California, Berkeley
Mislow Lectures
Kurt Mislow was the Hugh Stott Taylor of Chemistry Emeritus and a pioneer in the theory of modern stereochemistry. The Kurt Mislow Annual Lecture in Stereochemistry celebrates his life, science, and legacy, and continues to be stewarded by his widow, Jacqueline Mislow. Kurt joined the Princeton faculty in 1964, transferring to emeritus status in 1988. He died in 2017 at the age of 94.
Here are the dates of his symposia and the featured speakers:
· Nov. 20, 2019 – Carolyn Bertozzi, Stanford University
· Nov. 1, 2022 – Mircea Dincă, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
· April 24, 2023 – Benjamin Cravatt, Scripps Research Institute
· Sept. 9, 2024 – Xiaowei Zhuang, Harvard University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute
Kauzmann Lectures
Walter Kauzmann was the David B. Jones Professor Emeritus of Chemistry. He is best known for his seminal work on the hydrophobic effect, and his insights into the water-loathing properties of greasy molecules paved the way for the modern study of proteins. He earned his doctoral degree at Princeton in 1940 and joined Princeton’s Department of Chemistry in 1946. He died in 2009 at the age of 92.
Here are the dates of his symposia and the featured speakers:
· Dec. 2, 2014 – JoAnne Stubbe, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
· Sept. 24, 2015 – Stephen Kent, University of Chicago
· April 18, 2016 – Sharon Hammes-Schiffer, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
· Sept. 15, 2022 – Shankar Balasubramanian, University of Cambridge
