Lessons from Complex Natural Product Synthesis:
Cases of Carthamin and Spiroxins
The structural beauty and diversity of complex natural products derived from the polyketide type-II biosynthesis led us to study toward their total synthesis. This is a remarkable pathway that generates an impressive array of bioactive compounds with densely functionalized polycyclic architectures. The diversity is further enhanced by (1) post modifications, including oxidative de-aromatization, (2) dimerization, and (3) hybridization with other biosynthetic products, such as sugars and isoprenoids.1 This talk will deal with our recent syntheses of carthamine2 and the spiroxins.3
