Shaughnessy Naughton, a chemist and former Congressional candidate from Pennsylvania, is the founder of 314 Action, a nonprofit advocacy organization committed to advocating for the voices of scientists to be heard in Washington. After running for office in a competitive primary in Pennsylvania’s Eighth Congressional District, Naughton realized that while scientists and STEM professionals are underrepresented in government, they also face unique barriers to entering into politics. 314 Action seeks to change that by recruiting, training and supporting members of the scientific community who are interested in running for public office. Naughton will discuss her work with 314 Action, the experience of running for office as a STEM professional, and the unique challenges facing the scientific community under President Trump’s administration.
