Research Focus

István is a native of Hungary, where he received his Ph.D, as a research chemist in Szeged. He has been working on NMR projects from his university years, and immediately after, at a leading pharmaceutical research facility in Budapest. He was a visiting scientist with Jeremy Sanders (Cambridge, UK), Ad Bax (NIH, Bethesda, MD), and Heinz Rüterjans (Frankfurt, GE). In 1989 István joined Syracuse University at the invitation of George Levy and spent almost eight years developing multidimensional experimental methods and conducting NMR studies of biomolecules. He was later promoted to the rank of Research Assistant Professor. He was also an Application Scientist at New Methods Research, Inc. (NMRi) developing pioneering multidimensional NMR data processing technology. In 1996, he was recruited to Princeton University, where he now is on the teaching faculty as a Lecturer and is Director of NMR Facility at Department of Chemistry, a world-class collection of NMR technology.

István has extensive experience with liquid state NMR applications and method development for small and large molecules alike. He is author/co-author of more than one hundred peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations, and organizer of many meetings and events over the years. He has become deeply engaged in mixture analysis by NMR and multivariate statistics, using this technology both for metabolomics of biological materials and for food/beverage analysis.

The latest development for the NMR Facility is acquisition of a top-notch 400 MHz ssNMR with a Klystron-based DNP accessory, which is a new and exciting challenge and adventure for István and NMR Coordinator Kenith Conover.

István has an extensive history of teaching graduate courses, chaperoning numerous Senior Thesis and JP students, and summer program participants, is assisting Department users with advice and practical guidance about NMR experiments and data processing.
