Haw Yang, a Princeton University professor of chemistry, has received a $2.3 million grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to develop a set of technologies that will allow scientists to remotely control and navigate individual nanoscale devices — as well as the chemistry around them — inside living cells in 3-D.

The project, “The Molecular Optical Deep-Cell Explorer: Beyond Imaging,” (grant no. GBMF4741) is funded through the foundation’s Imaging Molecular Interactions program, which supports early-stage experiments that may lead to the development of higher-resolution, molecular-level imaging tools. The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation supports path-breaking scientific discovery, environmental conservation, patient care improvements and preservation of the special character of the Bay Area.
